Tut: Monster High Hair, Wigs by MichaelisK Tut: Monster High Hair, Wigs by MichaelisK
oh lord my nails look so awful in this. I am a terrible boy who needs to learn to file his nails down before photographing things.

The information within can be applied to any playline doll, but seeing as I was getting many questions on my Monster High body prep tutorial re: wigs, I applied it specifically to them.

I do not generally use wigs in my playline fashion doll customs, unless I am going for a specific effect or difficult hairstyle that would be better obtained or maintained via a wig, but the choice is yours.

Before anyone asks about the wigs used in the tutorial:

* The Liv wig was borrowed off of an Alice in Wonderland Target Exclusive doll my sister owns, as I don't own any Liv dolls. They're creepy. It is NOT for sale, and that is where you get it.

* The Moxie Teen wig, complete with the crocheted cap, came off my Moxie Teen Bijou doll.

Thank you for looking, once again, and don't be scared to ask questions.

Can you change the skin colour of a monster high doll? If so, how? Acrylic paints? Or is there a better method?

I think Liv wigs are far, far, far, better than MT wigs. I've used both and I think MT wigs are humongous and the Liv wigs I've bought have been perfect.

Thanks for making this cause I really needed it. I'm planning on making a custom, so this is a big help!

Which of the two would you recomend for draculara
SMdoll Featured By Owner May 18, 2012  Student Photographer
You might want to change the PukiPuki to Pukifee. Pukipuki wear size 3-4 wigs, Pukifee (and lati-yellow) wear size 5-6. Since Live/Moxie wigs fit pukifee too, I'm assuming this is what you meant!

Thanks for the great tutorials though. I caved and bought my first two MH dolls so we'll see how this goes!

If you de-hair your dolls first, the LIV hair wigs are just amazing. All you have to do is remove the peg and it's a perfect fit. If you have the creator kit, you can just keep the peg too.

for monster high dolls, liv doll wigs WILL work for the following - cleo, create a monster vampire, draculaura, ghoulia - i tried on frankie doll - her head is too big - might get a tight squeeze IF you cut the frankie's hair off - but don't do this if you don't want your frankie's hair cut or if you want to switch wigs with the frankie doll, clawdeen maybe the same way, her head looks about the same as frankie's, abbey - i'm not sure, i didn't try it on my abbey because i don't care to, i like my abbey the way she is, toralei - if her ears weren't there then i think a liv wig would fit her head, but i said THINK it would, doesn't mean it will, spectra yes a liv wig fits on her head - cupid i dunno, possibly if you cut her hair or if you straighten all her hair, nefera - don't have but i don't think i'd work - she's built to be bigger then the other dolls, so i'd say no, but i'm not sure either. hope this helps

If you are using the Create-a-monster kit, the LIV wigs actually work PERFECT as the peg matches the MH wig peg. I created a dragon girl and used a long blond LIV wig. I plan on trying Moxie Teens when I edit an existing MH character though. Thanks for the tutorial!

I haven't used any Moxie wigs myself; my local area doesn't really sell those seperately here. I have used several Liv wigs, after removing the pegs of course (though the newer wigs have smaller pegs so it' sharder) and the covering the ear thing I do have problems with, but on some cases (like my Kat Shire, whom I added cat ears onto the wig) it can be a bonus (since her "human ears" shouldn't be there, like with Clawdeen's sculpt); the straight hair styles are the better since they can cover the plastic edges whereas the more fancy designs can leave the edge visible (sadly my Operetta has that problem, but I just adore her wig, so I deal with it ^^; ) Should also note that Liv wigs fit Deuce's head very snuggly WITH his snake cap on (ie removing the mowhawk but leaving the rest of it), the side burns are visible, but if you remove the whole scale cap, it'll be really loose on his head and would require glueing to stay on.

Thank you for the head sizing thing too! I've seen the BJD wigs and was sorta confused by all of that, though I'd sorta figured out that the MH dolls would take a smaller sized one...though the prices; a Liv wig is like half what a BJD wig is and it's actually hair not fur. Personally I perfer hair, but I've been considering one of those since I need a specific color for a boy and I don't want to attempt to reroot a Deuce yet...but that's really good to know.

Personally I perfer rehairs too, but I'm not very good at styling ^^; And with limited hair at my disposal atm, wigs just work well. But it's great to know that other wigs work great too! Next time I go shopping I'll have to look for single Moxie wigs in my Rika's color...or in the teal/green I need for Ollie...

I suppose that it's true a Liv wig could do the part if you're actually trying to cover the ears; I didn't think of it that way!

And on BJD wigs... MOST BJD wigs are made with real hair. Only a small amount are "fur wigs" as they're called. Here's the thing though- it's almost always SIGNIFICANTLY better quality. When it comes to wigs, you usually get what you pay for. They're better made, and better quality material. I've been in the doll and wig business (two things which overlap a lot, hee!) for years. I paid my way through parts of college making synthetic dreadlocks. It's like how you can spend $15 for a wig for yourself at Halloween, or you could spend $50 or so for a basic wig at a professional wigmaker's, but the $50 wig will very likely be much better. My ball joint doll has a synthetic mohair wig from Monique, a porcelain doll supply maker, and I paid about $30 for it, but it's held up for six years and is some of the most delicate, soft material I've seen in a doll wig besides, of course, real mohair.

I did not know that bit about Deuce's snakey head being a good "wig cap". Never modded a boy yet. Do you mind if I amend that to the description?

You get better with rehairs over time. A lot of people are intimidated to try them but they're really easy once you get the hang, just a whole lot more work. I was planning on doing a reroot tutorial next but, heh, it'd going to take a LOT more effort to photograph... and I'm going to need to pick up some tools. I almost exclusively use a punch tool now but for various reasons that method doesn't work for some people, so I want to cover every way I know how to.... that and it just plain doesn't work for some material. Punch-needling makes an absolute mess out of mohair or synthetic mohair and only really works for synthetic hair like saran or kanekalon.

ahhh that's also good to know, because when i was looking them up on eBay a while back all i was able to seem to find were fur ones  so that's very good to know.

and course not, feel free to, always happy to help ^^ i've had people ask me about that actually when they modified a deuce of theirs and after i told them they're all "aw man i shouldn't've thrown that out!" so it is a very good thing to know before you start.

and i know, i've been rehairing MLPs for about 3 years, it's just the idea of having to create a plug pattern that deters me. the factory patterns are a trick enough to fill up, but having to create my own and have it be functional? it's very ominus in my mind ^^; but not outside the realm of possibility, because i have ad to do that for some MLPs too (though those are often just adding a row not an entire part and whatnot). and the puch tool hu? i perfer the knot method myself; it apprently takes more time and can tear up your fingers, but it doesn't require glue, and all i need material wise is the hair, a spool of thin craft wire, and the basic pliers and scissors. course i also only use nylon and saran hair; we've a wool allergy in my family, so i tend to have to stay away from that and mohair.

ok so i use liv wigs for my customs, and i remove the peg, and i find they look pretty good :D some with hair pulled back dont, but if they have bangs on side swept hair they look nearly as good (please look at my custom Hannah Lecter and Evie Hallows who wear liv wigs) :D
MichaelisK Featured By Owner Sep 8, 2011
Well, if that is what you wish to use, that is your prerogative as a customiser. But I personally have not liked the results of the use of a Liv wig for the reasons I'd stated in my tutorial.
swenj1 Featured By Owner Sep 8, 2011  Hobbyist Artisan Crafter
i actually plan to reroot a wig! with take the hair out, then i can cut it to shape :D
MichaelisK Featured By Owner Sep 8, 2011
Well, it'd actually be better in that case to make a wig to shape from scratch with your hair of choice. There's wig cap patterns out there. It'd be much cheaper and just requires some simple sewing skills to make the cap, but wefting can be difficult for a beginning sewer.

I agree wholeheartedly about the Liv wigs without the peg. I plan on using a lot of Liv wigs for my first BJD when I get her. (I already have one and plan on getting the Alice Liv set just to mug her for 'Henshin' purposes. XD)

A good tutorial though.
